Etymology[edit]

Likely from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wedH- (to utter, to call), and cognate with Proto-Hellenic *awéidō (to sing) (per Calvert Watkins), whence Ancient Greek ἀείδω (aeídō, to chant, praise), as well as with αὐδή (audḗ, voice; speech), Proto-Slavic *vaditi (whence Polish wadzić (to encumber)), Lithuanian vadìnti, and Hittite [script needed] (watarnahh-, to inform, report).
