From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sárati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sárati, from Proto-Indo-European *sél-e-ti, from *sel- (to run, flow). Cognate with Latin saliō and Ancient Greek ἅλλομαι (hállomai).

Not to be confused with स्रवति (sravati) from स्रु (sru).
