Onomatopoeic. Cognate with Telugu అయ్యో (ayyō), Kannada ಅಯ್ಯೋ (ayyō), Malayalam അയ്യോ (ayyō), Tulu ಅಯ್ಯೋ (ayyō). Compare Chinese 哎喲/哎哟 (āiyō).
