Etymology

[edit]

From Pali sappāya (beneficial), possibly via Middle Khmer សាបាយ (sāpāya, good; fit; beneficial; wholesome; healthful; pleasant; agreeable; comfortable; at ease); compare Sanskrit सभेय (sabheya, decent; well-behaved). Cognate with Khmer សប្បាយ (sapbaay), Lao ສະບາຍ (sa bāi).
