Etymology 1
[edit]Possibly from Old Khmer សៀម (siama) (whence Modern Khmer សៀម (siəm), ស្យាម (syaam), Mon သေမ်, သေံ), becoming เซียม (siiam). And later, the spelling was meant to imitate Sanskrit श्याम (śyāma) which did not relate at all.[1]
Officially used as the name of the country from the reign of Mongkut (1851–68) until 24 June 1939, when the country was renamed ไทย (tai, “Thailand”).
