From Old Khmer trai (“triple; threefold”); ultimately from Sanskrit त्रय (traya, “triple”), from which Thai ตรัย (dtrai) is derived. Cognate with Lao ໄຕ (tai), Modern Khmer ត្រៃ (tray).
