From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-riŋ ~ s-r(j)aŋ (to live, to be alive). Cognate with Tibetan གསིང་མ (gsing ma, pastureland), Old Chinese (*sreŋ, sreŋ-s, to live, be born) and Chinese (shēng, animal).
