From *ბჟა (*bja, sun) +‎ -შ (, genitive case marker) +‎ დღა (dğa, day). *ბჟა (*bja) ultimately goes back to Proto-Kartvelian *mz₁e-.

Cognate with Mingrelian ჟაშხა (žašxa).
