Georgian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Old Georgian საქართველო (sakartvelo), equivalent to ქართველი (kartveli, “Georgian”) + სა- -ო (sa- -o), and literally means “a place where Georgians dwell”. The earliest reference to the word occurs in the ninth-century text The Georgian Chronicles. Compare to Laz ოქორთურა (okortura, “Georgia”) and Mingrelian საქორთუო (sakortuo, “Georgia”).
