Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *weḱ- (to choose, want). Akin to Old Armenian վասն (vasn, for the sake of), Sanskrit वश्ति (vaśti, he wills) and Old Persian 𐎺𐏁𐎴𐎠 (vašnā, thanks to).
