Coptic

Etymology

[edit]

Most likely borrowed from Arabic اَلْقَاهِرَة (al-qāhira). A common folk etymology derives it from ⲕⲁϩⲓ (kahi, place of) + ⲣⲏ (, the sun, deity Re). A proper Coptic form would be ⲕⲁϩⲓ ⲛ̀ⲣⲏ or ⲕⲁϩⲣⲏ.
