Unknown. One possibility is from Proto-Indo-European *hโeyg- (โto lament (?)โ), with cognates Old Irish รฉigid (โcries in distress, groansโ) and Ancient Greek ฮฟแผถฮบฯฮฟฯ (oรฎktos, โpityโ).[1]
