Etymology

First attested in the Worin cheon'gangjigok (月印千江之曲 / 월인천강지곡), 1449, as Middle Korean ᄣᆞ리다 (Yale: pstoli-ta), a fully independent verb in Middle Korean meaning "to break".

뜨리다 (-tteurida) (infinitive 뜨려 or 뜨리어, sequential 뜨리니)

  1. (transitive, auxiliary, after the / infinitive, unproductive) creates the causative form of many compound verbs formed by the auxiliary 지다 (jida) (third sense), especially verbs with ideophonic nuances or relating to movement.
    깨지다 > 뜨리다kkaejida > kkaetteurida(intransitive) to break > (transitive) to break
    구부러지다 > 구부러뜨리다gubureojida > gubureotteurida(intransitive) to bend > (transitive) to bend
    넘어지다 > 넘어뜨리다neomeojida > neomeotteuridato trip, to fall down > to push; to topple
  2. (transitive) Synonym of 치다 (-chida, emphatic suffix).
    밀치다 / 뜨리다milchida / miltteuridato push forcefully

Usage notes

(synonym of 치다 (-chida)):

  • Verbs formed by 치다 (-chida) can be intransitive, but their 뜨리다 (-tteurida) equivalents are always transitive.
