German

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Principally from altertümeln +‎ -er. In the rare sense directly from Altertum +‎ -ler, but with possible disparaging allusion to the former (which makes it difficult to separate them).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈaltəʁˌtyːmləʁ/, [ˈʔal.tɐˌtyːm.lɐ]

Noun

[edit]

Altertümler m (strong, genitive Altertümlers, plural Altertümler, feminine Altertümlerin)

  1. someone who imitates the past, an archaizer
  2. (rare, mostly either derogatory or erroneous) a scholar of the antiquities (ancient history), an antiquarian
    Synonyms: Altgeschichtler, Altertumskundler, Altertumsforscher
