Birmingham wire gauge (uncountable)

  1. A standard for the measurement of the diameter of wire (and hypodermic needles, catheters, etc.), using a scale from 5Ø or 00000 (corresponding to the largest size of 0.5 inches or 12.7 millimetres) to 36 (the smallest size of 0.004 in or 0.10 mm).
