- In Scandinavia, Frida mainly derives from the Old Norse name Fríða, short for female names ending in fríðr (“beautiful, beloved”).
- In Central and Eastern Europe, Frida is a short form of compound names containing the Germanic element fried "peace"; cognate to English Freda.
