Etymology

Borrowed from Dutch knapzak (older form cnapsack), from Middle Dutch cnappen (to bite with teeth), ultimately from knappen (to eat, crack), of imitative origin, + Sack. Cognate with Low German knapzak. Compare German Schnappsack.
