The street, former Calle Sacristia, was renamed after Roman Ongpin, whose surname is from Hokkien (Ông Pin), the surname and part of the given name of the Hokkien Chinese name of Roman Ongpin's father, Simon Ongpinco, known in Hokkien as (Ông Ia̍k-pin).
