Etymology[edit]
Possibly an extension of *key- (“to be hot, to burn”), whence the Germanic terms *haitaz (“hot”), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍃 (hais, “torch”), and Proto-West Germanic *haj (“heat”).
