Proto-West Germanic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Derived from Proto-Germanic *fellą (“skin, hide”).[1]
An alternative theory derives the word from Proto-Indo-European *peld- (“something beaten or compressed; felt”), from *pel- (“to beat; push; move; drive”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
