have come a long way

Maybe have come a long way is rather British ? --Backinstadiums (talk) 09:25, 2 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Like ‘by a long way’, this phrase is certainly widely used here in Britain but again I couldn’t attest to how uniquely British it is. I may well create an entry for ‘by a long way’ and find some quotes to illustrate its meaning. We’ll see if they end up being from British authors and websites or notOverlordnat1 (talk) 10:45, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

In fact I just did a Google n-grams search and ‘come a long way’ is equally popular in both the U.K. and the U.S but ‘by a long way’ is 4 to 5 times more popular in the U.K. ‘By a long chalk’ is about 2 to 3 times as popular in the U.K as the U.S but it was about as popular in both countries until around 1910.Overlordnat1 (talk) 12:12, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
