Regarding the Dutch etymology for fiets there's an interesting theory and some evidence that it came from the German homophone Vize meaning "vice." As in, "vice-horse" (a surrogate horse).

And we've been quoted here dismissing that etymology, which bothers me, as we editors really shouldnt be injecting our own opinions into the etymology sections of our entries. And because it was just happenstance that he stumbled upon the page that day, seeing as our etymology section was much more favorable towards the Vizepferd theory just two months earlier. I tried to find a middle ground that just presents the theories without commenting on which one we like the most. Soap 11:37, 27 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
