The source of the intrusive /r/ may be parsley, a similar and closely related vegetable, with the relation perhaps hidden by the fact that we (at least in some countries) tend to eat different parts of the two plants. I've even seen somewhere (maybe Wikipedia) mentioning briefly that the name does not come from a portmanteau of parsley and turnip, suggesting that in the minds of many people, it seems like it must.
