10 minimum why[edit]

The name makes the cap of 12 obvious (as 13 is teen) but why is 10 the bottom limit? There are no usages which include 9 or exclude 10? ScratchMarshall (talk) 17:11, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

I would analyze it as meaning "about to be a teenager; looking forward to adolescence" whereas younger kids just think of themselves as kids and might see little difference between teenagers and adults. Soap 04:32, 4 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Additionally I'd say that this word comes up mostly in contexts where teenagers are also present or are expected to be. Nobody would say "I'm hosting a party for all of the preteens in the class" but they might say "teens and preteens alike are invited to the party in the rec center".
