Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German wüeste, from Old High German wuostī, from Proto-West Germanic *wōstį̄. Equivalent to wüst +‎ -e. Also merged with Middle High German wüestene, from Old High German wuostin, *wuostinna, from Proto-West Germanic *wōstini (through regular reduction of feminines in -en(e) to -e, compare Küche etc.). The latter is cognate with Dutch woestijn.

Noun

[edit]

Wüste f (genitive Wüste, plural Wüsten)

  1. desert
  2. wilderness, waste, wasteland
    • 1844, Felix Mendelssohn, Hör' mein Bitten (with literal translation):
O könnt' ich fliegen wie Tauben dahin,
weit hinweg vor dem Feinde zu fliehn!
In die Wüste eilt' ich dann fort,
      fände Ruhe am schattigen Ort.
Oh, if I could fly off like the doves,
flee far away from the foe!
Into the wilderness I would then hasten,
and find repose in a shadowy place.
