Etymology

First attested as De Schwarte Hinde in 1811. Derived from zwart (black) and either horn (corner of a levee) or haan (rooster). Depending on the interpretation of the second element, the element zwart may refer to the colour of the earth around the settlement or to a pub sign depicting a black rooster.
