airplane cloth (uncountable)

  1. A closely-woven mercerized linen or cotton fabric, originally used for airplane wings, but later for garments such as sportswear and uniforms, and light luggage.[1] [2]
    • 1953, Ira Levin, chapter 11, in A Kiss Before Dying[3], New York: Pyramid, published 1964, page 46:
      In one white-gloved hand she held a purse, in the other, a small valise covered in tan airplane cloth with wide red stripes.
