Etymology[edit]
From Latin austērus (“dry, harsh, sour, tart”),[1] from Ancient Greek αὐστηρός (austērós, “bitter, harsh”), having the specific meaning "making the tongue dry" (originally used of fruits, wines), related to αὔω (aúō, “to singe”), αὖος (aûos, “dry”).
