From earlier bagin, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *balaʀən (“vine”) with elision of /l/. Compare Aklanon baeagon, Cebuano balagon, Hiligaynon balagon, Western Bukidnon Manobo belagen, Maranao balagen, Maguindanao balagen, and Tausug bāgun.
