Etymology

From Old Swedish bevara, from Middle Low German bewaren, from Proto-Germanic *biwarōną from *bi- + *warōną. Equivalent to be- +‎ vara (to last). Cognate with English beware, Danish bevare, Norwegian Bokmål bevare, Norwegian Nynorsk bevare, bevara, Dutch bewaren and German bewahren. Displaced native gömma in this sense.
