Inherited from Vulgar Latin *comperāre, from Latin comparāre, present active infinitive of comparō (prepare, procure, get, purchase, obtain). Ultimately from cum (with) + parō (prepare). Compare Italian comprare, Spanish comprar, Aromanian acumpãr, acupãr.
