Etymology

[edit]

di- (oral) + -ni- (adjectival) + -si- (modal) + -∅- (3rd person subject prefix) + -ł- (classifier)-yéél (neuter perfective stem of root -YÉÉL, “to be calm”).

The root onset, originally *gh (> y), devoices after ł-classifier: ł + ghéél > ł + héél.

For the high tone on the prefix complex, see also díní-.
