Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Medieval Latin dūra māter [cerebrī] (literally “hard mother [of the brain]”), loan translation of Arabic أُمّ الدِّمَاغ الصَفِيقَة (ʔumm ad-dimāḡ aṣ-ṣafīqa, literally “thick mother of the brain, matrix of the brain”).
