From Proto-Germanic *durawardaz. Equivalent to duru (door) +‎ weard (guardian, watchman). Cognate with Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌰𐍅𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (daurawards, porter, gatekeeper), Icelandic dyravörður (porter) and German Torwart (goalkeeper).
