Etymology 1

The GDLC derive it from Mozarabic 'iškaylûla, diminutive of escalla, from Late Latin scandula (“type of wheat”). (Compare Spanish escanda (“emmer wheat”).) The DCVB derive it from Late Latin ēscāriola (“endive plant”), also the source of Catalan escarola.
