Etymology

From Old Norse í fyrstunni, a prepositional phrase using the dative singular definite of fyrsta f (“first; beginning”). The current forms suggest some re-analyzation and likening to the construction of samstundes (“meanwhile”), becoming equivalent to før (“before”) +‎ stund (“while”) +‎ -es.
