From Vulgar Latin *fangus, of Germanic origin, either from Proto-Germanic *fanją (“swamp, fen”) or Proto-Germanic *fangō (“mud, swamp”). Cognate with Old Occitan fanc, fang, Italian fango, Spanish fango. Compare also French fagne.
