From Old Norse freknur pl (compare Swedish fräkne, Danish fregne), s-less variant of Proto-Germanic *sprekalą 'freckle' (compare Norwegian dialect sprekla, Middle High German spreckel), from Proto-Indo-European *sp(h)er(e)g- 'to strew, sprinkle'. Cognate to sprøklutur.
