Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Compound of golf (“wave”) + breker (“breaker”).
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
golfbreker m (plural golfbrekers, diminutive golfbrekertje n)
- breakwater
- Synonyms: (archaic, rare) breekwater, (archaic, rare) zeebreker
- (proscribed) transversal dam built on a sandbeach to slow its erosion
- Synonyms: strandhoofd, havenhoofd
Usage notes[edit]
The sense dam transversal to the shoreline is proscribed as a transversal dam does not protect the shore against the oncoming waves (i.e. does not break the waves), unlike a breakwater which is a dam parallel to the shoreline.
