Etymology 1

From Middle Welsh gweir, from Proto-Brythonic *gweɣr, from Proto-Celtic *wegrom, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weg- (“increase, enlarge”) via a sense ‘outgrowth’. Cognate with Cornish gora and Old Irish fér (“grass”).
