From Proto-Nahuan *iːx-, from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *pusi. Compare Classical Nahuatl īxtli (“eye”). Cognate with Yaqui puusim, Hopi poosi'(at), Comanche pui, Shoshone buih, Cahuilla púchill, and Cora hɨʔɨsi.
