From Middle Dutch lidteken, remotivation (as “member mark”) of older lijcteken (literally body mark), from Proto-West Germanic *līkataikn. Cognate with Old High German līhzeihhan, whence (with interpretation as “glue mark”) archaic German Leimzeichen, Luxembourgish Läinzeechen.
