Inherited from Old Catalan ludria, from Vulgar Latin *lutria, from Latin lutra. Compare Occitan luria~loira, Spanish lutria~nutria, Asturian llóndriga. The Vulgar Latin form was influenced by Ancient Greek ἔνυδρις (énudris).
