From Proto-Algonquian *welaˑkani (“bowl, plate”). Cognate with Abenaki welôgan, Penobscot wə̀lαkan, Massachusett wunnonk, Menominee onākan, Ojibwe onaagan, Fox anâkani, Miami alaakani, Mohegan-Pequot wiyôk.
