Etymology[edit]
Syncopic form of lunaan from Cebuano luna (“canvas; space; place; area”) + -an. Coined by Isidro Abad, a former committee member representing Cebuano at the Surian ng Wikang Pambansa (Institute of National Language) around late 1930s as a substitute for Spanish-loaned lugar.
