[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish مثلا (mesela), derived from Arabic مَثَلاً (maṯalan, “for example”), adverbial accusative of مَثَل (maṯal, “example”), with loss of the nunation, resulting in mesela instead of expected *meselen, with pronunciation of final /aː/ instead of /en/ (compare Turkish evvela, for Arabic أَوَّلًا (ʔawwalan), or mutlaka, for Arabic مُطْلَقًا (muṭlaqan)). By surface analysis, mesel (“example”) + -an (adverbial suffix).
