Etymology

From the Old Norse verb nefna, from Proto-Germanic *namnijaną. Cognates include German nennen, not least the other North-Germanic languages Faroese nevna, Icelandic nefna, Swedish nämna, and Danish nævne (Norwegian Bokmål nevne).
