From the fusion of Proto-West Germanic *seglagaʀdī and *seglagaʀd; equivalent to seġl +‎ ġierd and seġl +‎ ġeard respectively. Cognate with Old Saxon segalgard, segelgerd, Old Dutch segilgerda, Old High German segalgerta.
