[edit]From Ancient Greek σημασία (sēmasía, “the meaning of a word”) + -γραφία (-graphía, “-graphy, writing”), from σημαίνω (sēmaínō, “I show by a sign, signify”), from σῆμα (sêma, “a mark, sign”).
