Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈspeːl.tjə/
  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: speel‧tje

Etymology 1

[edit]

From spel (game) +‎ -tje with lengthening of the root vowel as in glaasje etc. Doublet of spelletje. Compare the plurals spelen and spellen, which also show a secondary semantic distinction.

In the sense “toy” perhaps in part a new derivation from the related verb spelen (to play).
